A woman had shared a story on Reddit’s “AITA” subreddit. The Redditor had stated that she gave an ultimatom to her boss about firing a new employee, or that she would quit her job, after what they have been through.
“I have worked at a small, local business for almost 12 years now. We have about 8 employees currently and are short staffed. About 3 weeks ago they hired on some woman in her 50s, who we will call “Karen”. Karen, in the beginning, was very appreciative of being hired on – as her husband is out of work following a car wreck and their home was in the process of foreclosure.” OP started to her story.
“Karen” had said to her that she was unable to find a job for herself, as she had no work history, as she was a stay at home wife, with no children, for her whole life until that time.
In the beginning, OP and Karen had a good start, but one week, things went out of control. Karen said that she had five dogs, and OP explained that she could never have a dog as a pet, as she doesn’t like them. As Karen was offended by that statement, she didn’t talked with her for the rest of their shift.
At that night, OP’s phone got showered by notifications by Facebook, where Karen was commenting under each and every picture of OP’s children, like, “ew, you don’t like dogs but you like these ugly things? 🤮🤮” under hjer 4-month-old child’s picture, and on other pictures of her 12-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter as, “gross.”
OP took the screenshots of the comments, then blocked Karen from her account. On the next day, she directly went to her boss, and showed the proof what Karen did. Then she gave the ultimatom as, “Either you fire her right now or I’m gone. I refuse to be in the same work place as this b****.”
Then Karen had entered to the boss’ office, and she was informed to take her belongings from her desk, and leave. OP said, “She asked why and he pointed to the screenshots on my phone and said “this is why”. She started berating me, of course, because I got her fired when she desperately needs the money because they will lose their home and no one else would hire her and she can’t believe I’m being “so sensitive” and that she “just wanted me to feel how she felt” when I “threw in her face that I don’t like dogs.”
Here are some comments from Redditors;
“That’s crossing a line, the toothpaste cannot be put back in the tube. Somewhere in this woman’s minuscule brain, she had to have known that. Stalk a co-worker’s FB if you must, but don’t leave vicious comments under photos. That’s unhinged.”
“Exactly. Your actions, and your boss’s response, were the only appropriate actions in this situation. Good on you.”
“NTA. I suspect that someone who’s surprised that harassment will get her fired is the kind of person that’s hard to hire. I doubt her lack of employment history had much to do with her financial woes.”
