An orphan from Ukraine, Natalia Grace was born with a form of dwarfism, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. It was 2008, when she arrived to the United States.
As she lived in several foster families, in 2010, Natalia was adopted by a couple from Indiana, Michael and Kristine Barnett. They were thinking that they had a six-year-old daughter, but later the couple started to be suspicious of her.
They noticed that Natalia had pubic hair, and she also had monthly cycle. The couple were suspicious that she was older than her age in the legal documents.
As the couple had petitioned for a change, they stated that Natalia’s age should be 22 instead of 8, in 2012.
A doctor they went to had explained that Natalia was an adult. Michael and Kristine Barnett had three children, and they moved to Canada on 2013, while leaving Natalia alone in Lafayette, Indiana.
As the adoptive parents had cut their ties with Natalia, the story had resurfaced again in 2019. Michael and Kristine Barnett were charged with neglecting a dependant. After that, the couple tried to explain that Natalia was an adult when they had adopted her.
In the three part documentaries, “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace,” which streamed on Max and Discovery +, the situation was talked over.
The series started when Natalia was adopted by Michael and Kristine, in 2010.
The couple was talking about how they noticed that Natalia was an adult, in the documentaries. She was older than her appearance. They were also shocked that she had no accent too, as she was allegedly migrated to USA, through adoption.
As they had accused Natalia with threatening their lives, Kristine explained that she tried to poison her and said that she would stab them. “We are living with a con artist sociopath,” the couple explained.
Also, some neighbors had appeared on the documentaries too. Toby Miles, one of the neighbors had stated that Natalia would carry a knife with her, and he saw that she tried to poison Kristine.
As Toby said, Natalia was forced to live in the garage, and the couple had hide every cutlary in their house.
Natalia also appeared on Dr. Phil, with the new family who adopted her.
Anton and Cynthia Mans only talked greately about Natalia, and Natalia had accused Michael with lying about her.
She explained that her old adoptive parents were trying to show her as a “crazy person.” Her new family had described her as a “genuine, loving” person. They explained that Natalia was not the “adult sociopath masquerading as a child” she was rumored to be.
In her talk with Dr. Phil, Natalia explained that she was eight years old when Michael and Kristine abandoned her alone.
With the DNA test she took, it was proven that Natalia was indeed an 8-year-old little girl when Michael and Kristine abandoned her.
