Monica was married to her husband for five years, and each year, at Christmas, her mother-in-law would gift her porcelain dolls. As she was thinking that it was a sweet gesture from her mother-in-law, and the dolls were looking like antiques, she was always giving her gifts in secrecy.
Monica was thinking that it was a part of a collection, and her mother-in-law didn’t wanted other family members to learn.
She explained that she was not a doll person, as she has no place to display them in her home where she is living with her husband, so she kept the dolls in her closet.
Monica also thought about giving them to the local orphanage for Christmas, but these dolls were not made for playing, so she changed her mind.
Her husband had stated that he would get her a new closet for this Christmas, so she was packing her belongings from her closet, before the carpenter came and change the closets.
As she pulled the dolls from the closet, her husband, Andy’s face turned white when he saw the dolls.
“Where are those from?” Andy asked as he was pointing at the dolls.
“From your Mom, they’ve been my Christmas presents for all these years,” Monica answered.
“Five years? Monica, really?” Andy responded.
“What?” Monica wondered.
“Come with me,” Andy said, and he took them while rushing out.
“Where are you going?” Monica said as she followed her husband.
Then Andy throw the dolls to the fire place one by one.
“Please explain why you just did that,” Monica said as she was shocked.
“Mon,” he said as he was terrified, “You know that our cultures are very different, right?”
She nodded, as she agreed with her husband, and she was still learning his culture after five years.
“Honey, these dolls are for cleansing the homes that they are put in. They remove all the negative energy. That’s their role — to absorb energy and protect the house.” Andy explained.
“That sounds good,” Monica said, as she liked the idea.
“Yes and no,” Andy continued. “According to the legend, the dolls reach a point where they can no longer absorb any more negative energy. It’s like they absorb everything they can, and then when they can’t do it anymore, they begin to poison the air around them. Enveloping the house in diseases. They are said to literally make the air toxic.”
“What?” Monica was shocked. “How can we fix this? They’ve been here for years!”
“Well, I know that burning them is a way to symbolically dispose of all the energy absorbed. So, that’s why I set them alight. Usually, you have to add incense and possibly flowers as an offering and do it outdoors, but this should be okay for now.”
“You’re being serious about all of this?” Monica asked as she was scared.
“It’s just tradition, but I didn’t know that this was what Mom gave you every year.” Andy said.
As the dolls turned into ashes, Andy scooped everything from the fireplace, and Monica took the ashes to the neares park to their house to get rid of them. Then she called her mother-in-law, Lina.
The old woman listened to her daughter-in-law in silent.
“It’s your responsibility, Monica,” Lina said, “You need to learn about our family traditions. Especially if you and Andy want to have children one day. Don’t accept gifts without understanding their purpose.”
Monica was shocked again with the response she met. She decided to talk with her husband, whenever she receives a gift from his family members. To learn the truth behind it.
