As Jennifer noticed some things in her daughter’s marriage, she had talked with her daughter, Susan. After they had talked, she had encouraged her daughter for a divorce, from her daughter’s husband, Stan.
Jennifer was not a mother who directly involves to her children’s lives, but after she had became the reason for her daughter’s divorce, she thought that if she was involved a bit much?
Jennifer was 62, and her children were not teenagers who had no idea what they were doing with their lives.
Her eldest daughter Susan was married with her husband, Stan. He was a wealthy and educated man, when Susan met her future husband with her family.
On the last Sunday, her daughter, Stan and their son, Gabriel was at Jennifer’s house for dinner. Things went weird at the dinner, as Stan wanted Susan to prepare his plate, as they were sitting at the table, and everything was in reach of Stan.
“You know what I like,” Stan said to Susan, as he handed over his plate to her.
“And don’t let the food mix, Susan. Don’t be stupid about this,” Stan added.
Jennifer was shocked with the behaviour of Stan. She was incredibly annoyed and frustrated with Stan’s actions, as she was thinking that how could he call her daughter stupid at her table.
Stan was also didn’t wanted Susan to eat her own food, before he was finished. When she started to eat, he was looking at her directly. Later, Jennifer found out that this was not the first time Stan was acting this way, as he was constantly acting like this at their own house too.
After the dinner, as Stan and his father-in-law were drinking and watching TV, Jennifer took her daughter and her grandson out to her garden with a hope that they would talk.
“Mom,” Susan started, “He is so controlling. And before, it was okay. I mean, it was manageable. I could handle it. But it’s been escalating, and I’ve been too afraid to speak about it because Stan makes it known that he’s the breadwinner in our family, and he will cut Gabriel and me off.”
“And what about work?” Jennifer asked.
“Work is great,” Susan responded, “Except that Stan told me to cut back my hours. He said it would be more important for me to spend time with Gabriel during his toddler years.”
Jennifer shook her head as her face was sad. Stan was also trying to rob her daughter from her profession. He was controlling what she was wearing, where she was going, and constantly criticising.
Then few days later Jennifer went to her daughter’s house to talk with her. As she noticed that Stan was trying to prevent her daughter’s independence, Jennifer suggested divorcing to her daughter. She explained that it was the only and the best option for Susan.
