A 33-year-old woman from Brazil, Karine de Sousa, was diagnosed with a rare skin condition when she was only three. The doctors diagnosed Karine with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, it meant that her skin was incredibly sensitive to ultravioley rays, by sun or any other source. She needed to protect her skin.
Her condition resulted with skin cancer, and lesions on her skin were removed with surgery. Untill this day, Karine had underwent 219 surgeries.
As she was struggling with her skin condition, Karine never felt hopeless, as she had her husband Edmilson with her, who was at her side, supporting no matter what.
One time at the hospital, while she was visiting as a routine, there were two nodes found in her lungs, which weren’t malignant. She needed a surgery though. Later, she had some paingul leisons on her back, which she needed a surgery again.
While she was being prepared for her surgery, the doctors revealed that Karine was pregnant. The couple were delighted to learn that they were going to be parents, but people online had some other thoughts, as they started to harrass them, by making mean comments about Karine’s skin condition.
People called Karine as an irresponsible person, just because she had a skin condition, and she wanted to be a mother. But the couple had already asked that if their child would have the condition of Karine, and learned that the chance was lover than one percent.
People said to Karine that she was not meant to become a mother, and some other even went and said that she was not meant to live in this world.
“The judgment is a reflection on themselves, not me.” Karine said about the criticism she received.
She stated that people should know the story of a person before judging them.
As they had received hateful comments from the cybertrolls, she was concerned about her daughter Zaya. Even though there was a slim chance of their baby carrying the same skin condition, the parents were afraid.
Karine is believing that her husband was a “a dream come true” for their loving relationship. As she was bullied for her whole life, her husband had supported him each and every time, with every struggle.
