Jean Ebbert, who was in her 70s, was about to become a victim of a fraud, who tried to scam her of $8,000. But as she planned a revenge, she handed the fraud over the authorities.
The former 911 dispatcher, 73-year-old Jean Ebbert, had tricked the criminal who tried to scam her. The old womanfrom Long Island, New York had recorded the moments where she had played with the man.
It happened in the January of 2022. When Ebbert’s phone rang, she first thought that it was her son-in-law. Then the man over the phone claimed that he was Ebbert’s grandson, and said that he needed $8,000 as he stated that he was caught driving under the influence of an illegal substance.
She directly understand that the man who called was not her grandson, she stated that her only grandchild who was able to drive was a female. She decided to play along with the scammer, and played with the man, who claimed that he was in New Jersey.
As the family of the woman stated that Ebbery should stop, the woman kept playing along. The scammer stated that she should not mention the incident to his mother, and Ebbert stated that she will handle the situation.
“I told him I had the money in the house, and I figured he’s not going to fall for that. Well, he fell for that hook, line, and sinker.” Ebbert stated.
Then the other scammer took the phone, and he introduced himself as the lawyer. Ebbert said that they can come to her house and take the money. Then she called the authorities and informed them about the scammers, and she wanted to be in the operation.
As the officers hide inside her house, when the scammers arrived to take the money, the officers rushed over to the criminal, and arrested him.
The man who took the money was identified as a 28-year-old man from Mineola, New York, Joshua Estrella Gomez.
“It was dramatic, and I think the county executive is going to deputize her as one of our police commissioners. [She] actually did a great job.” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated about the operation and Ebbert.
