Rodney came home with a gift box as he called for Stephanie, “I got you something special.”
“Is it the Grenui perfume I wanted?” Stephaine asked, as she took the box while she was reading a magazine.
“It’s not Grenui; that was out of our budget. But the salesperson assured me this is a great alternative…” Rodney said, as he saw the disappointment Stephanie had on her face.
“This smells awful! Why must everything you buy be so cheap?” She said.
“I’m sorry, baby. We’re just tight on money right now.”
“And who’s fault is that?” Stephanie’s voice got raised. “You promised me a better life. Basics aren’t enough. I didn’t sign up for just getting by.”
“Please, just a bit more time. I’ve made contacts. There’s interest in my idea,” Rodney said as he was hurt.
“I’ve heard enough promises. Either things change, or I’m done.”
On the next morning, Rodney was in a small laundry room, where he was wearing a bulky rabbit costume. While he was thinking if his girlfriend knew that he lost his job, what would she do, his boss came. “Hey, bunny guy, your shift started. We need those flyers handed out now.”
As he was in the costume, outside of the pizza parlor, he saw Stephanie with another man. He was shocked when she flirted with the man as she said, “Aw, what a cute bunny! Let’s take a picture with him, Mark.”
As Rodney saw Stephanie’s affair, he stood silent. He had planned something to teach her a lesson.
After his shift, Rodney went to the local cafe, where some entrepreneurs were talking. “This is it, guys! We’re on the brink of something big! Our hard work is finally going to pay off!” One of them yelled.
“Hard work? You think you’re the only ones working hard?” Rodney yelled with anger. “Look at me! Day in, day out, I grind away for a dream that’s slipping through my fingers. You sit here in your little bubble, thinking success is just around the corner. Wake up! The world doesn’t work that way!”
Then the barista asked Rodney to leave. As he stepped out, he accidentally stepped into a mud puddle, which his costume got dirty.
As he was walking in his costume, in despair, his phone got ranged. “Hi, Rodney. I’m calling from TechVenture Capital. We’ve reviewed your business proposal, and we’re interested. Can we set up a meeting to discuss this further?”
“Yes, yes, of course!” Rodney said. “I’m available anytime. Tomorrow works for me.”
“Great, let’s meet at our office, at 10 AM. We’re looking forward to discussing your project in more detail,” the person on the phone said.
Now he had a plan. He returned home with a gift certificate for the perfume Stephanie wanted.
“Is that for me?” She asked.
“I found an investor for my project,” Rodney said.
“Really? That’s… that’s great, Rodney,” Stephanie continued as she took the gift ticket. “I’m really happy for you.”
Then Rodney asked about her day, and while Stephanie was lying, he showed the rabbit suit. “You were with that guy, Mark. I heard everything,” he said as he took the gift ticket and destroyed it.
As Stephanie tried to lie, “Stop lying. There’s nothing left to say,” Rodney said. “I thought we had something real. I was wrong. All you care about is money.”
“In case you haven’t noticed, money is important!” Stephanie yelled, “You’re nothing without me. I stayed out of pity. You’ll regret this.”
“I don’t need your pity. It’s over,” Rodney said.
As Rodney went to the meeting with his potential investors, he saw Mark among them. “You!” Rodney yelled as he couldn’t keep his temper. “You ruined my life!”
As he accused Mark with the affair, the other people were shocked. “Mark? What is he talking about?” The woman who was at the other end of the table asked.
“He’s been having an affair with my wife! And he’s a married man, too! I heard him laughing about getting a great lawyer to divorce his wife so he can run off with mine.” Rodney raised his voice again.
“Is that true? Have you been cheating on me?” the woman asked. “Planning to divorce me?”
“Of course not, honey!” Mark was shocked, he was panicking. “This man is crazy.”
“You must think I’m such a fool. Maybe you’re right, considering that I’ve thought your dalliances meant nothing all these years. Well, this is the last straw.” The woman shook her head.
“Get out of my office, Mark. Now. And I’d better not find you at my house when I return home later.”
As Rodney thought that he lost his chance, and stand up to leave, the woman stopped him. “Don’t go. I’m Melissa, and we’re here for business. Let’s see your presentation,” she said.
“Life throws curveballs,” Melissa said. “But how we respond defines us. I need to call my lawyer for a divorce.” Then she shook Rodney’s hand, and left the conference room.
A YEAR LATER
As Rodney was walking in the street with his expensive suit, a woman stopped him, who was pushin a stroller. “Rodney,” she said, “Stephanie,” he was surprised.
“You and Mark had a baby?”
“No, it’s not like that,” Stephanie explained. “Mark left me, and I lost my job. I’m a nanny now.”
“I hope things get better for you,” Rodney said.
“Thanks, Rodney. I’m happy for your success,” she said and tried to continue as, “Rodney, do you think there’s ever a chance for us to—”
Her question got interrupted with Rodney’s response to his phone, “Hey, love, I’m on my way back now. Can’t wait to see you.”
“I have to go. My wife is waiting. Take care, Stephanie.” Rodney said before he left.
