Colleen was making mac and cheese, as Ray asked, “You’re making mac and cheese from a box?”
“It’s for Ben. He’s been so quiet,” Colleen said. “I thought he might like it.”
“He’s still adjusting. He’s been with us for a day. But, this might help.” Ray responded.
Then they called the 6-year-old Ben to eat. As he finished his meal, he asked for a permission to go back to his room.
As they went into Ben’s room, they Ben while feeding a baby.
“Ben, who’s baby is that?” Colleen was surprised.
“She’s my sister,” Ben answered.
“Your sister?” Colleen was confused.
“Not really. She’s the new foster at my old home. I couldn’t leave her,” Ben said.
As Colleen wanted to phone Mrs. Campbell, the coordinator, but Ben stopped, “No! She can’t take her back. Mr. and Mrs. Franklin, my foster parents, they’re not good people!”
“What do you mean?”
“They’re evil. She’ll be in danger,” Ben said.
Then Ben explained that Mr. Franklin had hurt him, and Colleen and Ray looked at each other. “You don’t have to be afraid. We’ll help you.” Ray said.
As Ray carried Ben back to his bed, he took the baby.
“What are we going to do?” Colleen asked, “We can’t keep the baby. We’ll get arrested.”
“I don’t know,” Ray replied. “But I don’t think Ben’s lying.”
“WHERE IS SHE?!” Ben shouted, as he awakened suddenly.
“She’s here, Ben,” Colleen said, then Ray asked, “Ben, we need something concrete. What did the Franklins do?”
“They hit me with a belt… and videoed it,” Ben explained.
Then they asked if Mrs. Campbell is aware of the situation. “No, but she must know. She keeps putting children with them,” Ben said.
“Okay… okay… we’re not putting her back.” Ray said.
“But we can’t keep her secretly, Ben. I know someone else in Mrs. Campbell’s department. We can do something about this,” Colleen said, as she called a DCFS worker, Alana.
“I’m sorry for calling late, Alana. We have a situation…”
******
Alana listened Ben at Ray and Colleen’s house. “Do you think Ben is lying?” Ray asked.
“I don’t think so,” Alana said. “Kids in bad situations hide the truth. He told you means he trusts you.”
“Children get moved around from their house frequently.” Alana said as she was suspected of Franklins.
“What should we do about the baby then?”
“I’ll authorize you as her foster parents temporarily,” Alana said, “I’ll have to be sneaky about it. But that’s my problem. Don’t tell anyone about this. Let me know if Mrs. Campbell calls you or anything.”
Few days later Colleen’s phone ranged, it was Mrs. Campbell.
“Hello?”
“Mrs. Ferguson, how are you?”
“I’m good. Ben’s adapting well,” Colleen said.
“I’m calling about something else,” the woman said, “Did Ben say anything about his foster parents?”
“No, he doesn’t talk about his past,” Colleen said, “I was thinking he might need therapy.”
“I don’t think that’s necessary,” the woman said, “But if he tells you something odd, please call me.”
“Is there something I should know about his foster parents?” Colleen tried to push her.
“No, nothing. I’m just busy, so I’ll have to go.”
At that moment Ben called Colleen, “Mom, the baby is trashing around!”
As Colleen heard Ben call her mom made her incredibly happy.
******
“I got too cocky, I think. But I had this feeling that she was hiding something and not being too subtle…” Colleen said to Ray.
“You shouldn’t have done that. We had an advantage against her and those perverts.”
“I know, but I already called Alana,” Colleen said, “She said not to worry because they’ll find out eventually.”
“Did she tell you the baby’s name?” Ray said.
“No, she’s still ‘baby girl,'” Colleen said.
“I’ll stay home tomorrow, just in case,” Ray continued, “We can’t take the baby out. We have to act like she’s not here.”
On the next day, a truck had slowed near their house, and stared at Ray, as he was leaving to get Ben from the school. It was weird.
“HEY!” Ray shouted, but couldn’t see who was it. As he tried to chase the truck, he lost it on a dirt path.
“Alana, this can’t continue. He was outside our house,” Ray explained the situation to Alana.
“You don’t know if that was Mr. Franklin,” Alana said, “I’m close to finding concrete evidence, so we can call the police for real and stop this.”
“We can’t wait. We’re in danger,” Ray said.
“I’m calling my mother,” Colleen said, “We’ll move into her house while Alana investigates.”
“I’ve noticed children frequently moved from the Franklins’ house. I’ve found an adult who was with them years ago. I’m waiting for his call.” Alana continued.
Then the couple heard a banging and shouting, Ray saw Mrs. Campbell and Franklins from the window.
“It’s them,” Ray said.
“I’m calling the cops!” Colleen yelled.
“Who are you? How dare you bang on my door?” Ray responded.
“You know me, Mr. Ferguson! I can take your son if you don’t let us in to get that baby!” They tried to threaten them.
“You wouldn’t dare,” Ray countered, “Not after what we know about you!”
“Cynthia, the only one making threats here is you. I suggest you leave before we call the police!” Alana said.
“We’re taking that baby!” The woman shouted.
“That’d be a crime!” Alana shouted back. “I’ve made the Fergusons her foster parents legally.”
“You had no right!”
“I did. And I’ve launched an investigation against you,” Alana said.
Then Mr. Franklin tried to hit Alana, but Ray interrupted him. Colleen was calling 911, but Mrs. Franklin slapped the phone from Colleen’s hand, “YOU WON’T CALL ANYONE! Give us the baby now!”
“BEN, GIVE US THE BABY!”
“Close and lock your door, Ben!”
Then Ray finally kicked them out of the house, “I will report you for assault!” Mrs. Campbell said.
“We will report you for trespassing!” Colleen said back.
“I’ve already called the cops!!” A voice said, the neighbors of the couple, Sarah and Andrew.
“Thanks, Andrew,” Ray said.
“Good! Now I can tell the cops all about your kidnapping. I know almost all of them in the department! You three are the only ones going to jail here!” Mrs. Campbell said.
When Officer Carson arrived, he believed Mrs. Campbell, and as he was barging inside to take the baby, Alana stopped him.
“I’m a social worker, too. And after some revelations from the child the Fergusons adopted, I put the baby in their care. It’s all official. I have the paperwork inside.”
“LIES!” Mrs. Franklin shouted.
“Officer, our adopted son revealed disturbing things about his former foster home,” Ray explained.
“Our son was wrong for that, but his intentions were pure.”
“Officers, please take a look,” Alana said, as she brought the paperwork.
“Those papers don’t justify stealing the baby from our home! Or how they attacked us just now!” Mr. Franklin said.
“Yes, it doesn’t matter what those documents say,” Mrs. Campbell supported her husband.
“The Fergusons acted illegally. Under state law, it’s kidnapping and assault.”
“I can’t believe you,” Colleen said to Mrs. Campbell.
Then Ben appeared out of nowhere, with the baby. “I took the baby! I’ll go to jail, but you can’t send any other kid to that house!”
“Kid, give the baby to Mrs. Campbell,” Officer said.
“NEVER!” Ben yelled, “Mrs. Franklin was recording while Mr. Franklin beat me! They showed me videos,” the little boy said. “Mr. Franklin was doing stuff to other boys. Terrible stuff. He had his—” then the boy pointed his crotch.
There were people outside who gasped.
“He’s misunderstood,” Mrs. Campbell tried to defend.
“Do you think he’s lying?” Officer Tristan asked to Alana.
“I don’t,” Alana said, “I have proof of their irregular foster placements.”
“There are throwing around baseless accusations! I’ll sue you!” Mr. Franklin said.
“Don’t you dare threaten anyone here, you pervert,” Ray said. “You’ll be in jail for a long time for what you, your ugly wife, and this horrible woman have done to many kids. Check out their home, Officers. They probably have the videos.”
“We have your address right here in this document, right? Let’s go right now.” Officer Tristan said.
“NO!” Mr. Franklin tried to stop the officer by tackling him.
“Well, Mr. Franklin, you just assaulted an officer of the law,” Officer Tristan said, as he arrested him, “You’re under arrest.”
“If you’re innocent, you have nothing to fear,” Officer Tristan said, as he took Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Franklin to under arrest too.
After they left, Ben started to cry, “You were so brave, Ben. You may have saved so many other kids,” Colleen said.
Alana called the on the next day, “The kid, Colin, came forward. Told the cops everything about the Franklins. They’re searching their house now. Mr. Franklin is still detained. Cynthia left. But if she runs, that’ll only implicate her more.”
“What about the baby girl’s name?” Colleen asked.
“It’s Grace,” Alana answered. “If you want, I can help you adopt her.”
