As it would be a great time to have a lovely evening at a fancy restaurant, with the presence of the loved ones, sometimes things would go south, and went terrible. Here are three stories from Redditors, where they talk about their terrible experiences at restaurants, where drama involved.
A Redditor stated that she was a mother, where her daughter had came back with her boyfriend, which the Redditor doesn’t like.
“I’m a mother of a 24 year old daughter “Christine”, Christine moved back to our hometown after obtaining her college degree and met her current boyfriend Simon (30). I’m not a big fan of Simon but we’re civil enough to be around each other.”
One day, the Redditor had invited her daughter for lunch, which she also brought her boyfriend with her too.
“The other day I called Christine to invite her for lunch and she agreed to come. Unbeknowest to me, she brought Simon with her. I was slightly bothered but only since I was looking for an ordinary mother-daughter lunch to catch up with stuff. I welcomed her and Simon and as far as ordering food, I ordered the usual for Christine but Simon went over the menu and picked many stuff, including a drink. Now this didn’t bother me because I figured that he would be paying for this stuff but apparently, this was not the case.”
Then things went south as, “The bill came and I told Simon and Christine that I was only paying for myself and Christine, Simon asked why was that and I told him because I didn’t invite him. He let out a loud “come on now! What?” And Christine asked if I was serious. I told her yes because I only invited her, didn’t I? She said that I was being rude and unwelcoming to Simon after he took the time to drop what he was doing and come join us but I frankly told her this wasn’t what I planned.”
“She got offended and said they’re both one and I should either pay for both of them or not pay at all, I told her this was not fair to both her and I but she said no this was unfair to !Simon!. I asked if he had money to pay and he shook his head “no”. I apologized and still stuck to paying for myself and Christine but she refused to let me, saying I either pay for both or not pay at all. I asked if that is what she really wanted and she noded. I said okay then, Paid for myself and left.”
The Redditor concluded as, “Clearly Christine had no money as well and they had to wait for a friend to pay for them at the restaurant and Christine was upset about that, she called me and said that I not only disrespected simon and made him feel unwelcome, but I also bailed on them by only paying for myself and leaving them stuck in a horrible situation begging a friend for help. She said she’s hurt, Simon’s hurt and they expect an apology and the money their friend paid since it’s a debt they need to return now. I told her it was her doing for bringing uninvited person with her then insisting that I pay fot them both or not pay at all. She argued that I was trying to avoid responsibility and should make it up to them if I care about our relationship but I said it won’t happen because I don’t owe them anything.”
The second story is from a New Year’s Eve dinner. There are an engaged couple in the story, and the family of the groom-to-be.
The Redditor stated that she was with her 37-year-old fiance, Sam, and his fmaily at the New Year’s Eve dinner.
“I had plans to spend NYE with Sam but he said he was out for NYE dinner celebration with his parents then called me again inviting me to join them and I happily did. His parents were there,
“I pulled my wallet out of my bag letting them know that we’ll split the check between us. Sam mumbled “no you don’t have to, we invited you” but I insisted. He and his parents then stared at me; I asked what was wrong and both MIL & FIL said they didn’t have money on them. I was shocked I turned to Sam and he said he too forgot his wallet at home and didn’t bring enough money to cover even on round of drinks.” The situation turned into, as OP wrote.
“His dad then laughed nervously “aright so guess we should let the doctor pay!!” I was taken a back I said I’m sorry but no this is just so much money to spend on one dinner by myself and I didn’t think I was expected to pay the entire bill. Sam said I should pay and he’d pay me back later but I said no since I know he will have to get a job to pay that much money. I said I’m sorry but this isn’t the first time I’ve been put in this situation by him and family where I’m expected to rescue them after they somehow forgot their wallets and expectbothers to pay hundreds for their extravagant dinner.”
“I told them I’ll only pay for what I had and that’s it, he and his parents were shocked. They started arguing about how I have the potential to pay right there and then but I was acting as if they were strangers not family but that doesn’t mean I’m obligated to pay, how could someone go out to a fancy restuarant, order so many dishes, desserts and drinks without bringing money?. Sam begged that I just do it and call it a night but I refused. The argument got heated then I got up and walked out.”
Later her fiance called her, and yelled at her that the Redditor ruined the New Year’s Eve, and he also ruined the celebrations of his parents.
The last story is about two women, who were friends for a time. One of the women was financially stable, and the other one was struggling with monetary issues, whose name was Acie.
“So, I’ve had this best friend since middle school. We’ll call her Acie. While she doesn’t come from a lot of money, her family is financially stable. Acie however hasn’t started working yet, and she completely depends on her parents. She has pretty expensive tastes, far more than what her parents can afford to pay for at times. Everything she owns has to be branded. She even judges me when I buy jewellery from the flea market, as she thinks it’s tacky and cheap. She’s an only child, but not too long ago, parents decided to cut her off. Ever since then, she’s had me pick up her tabs whenever we hang out. I didn’t mind first, as the restaurants we were going to were affordable.” The Redditor wrote.
“Acie had wanted to try this fine dining restaurant at the expensive side of the city for a while, and we had a huge festival (cultural) going on. This happened approximately two weeks ago. I assumed that we would go Dutch as previously, Acie was boasting about how much money she’d received from relatives as a gift during the festival. However, soon as we were handed the bill, Acie looked at me expectantly. She used to ask earlier if I could cover her, but she got so in the habit of me paying that she just waited for me to do it without even asking. I laughed and told her I couldn’t afford to pay all of it, and we’d have to pay for our own parts.”
Acie then stated that she had no money with her, and the OP asked about the checks she received as gifts. Acie stated that she was saving them for a gold necklace she would like to get for herself.
“I told her I was willing to split it instead of paying for only my part. She had ordered a lot more than me, but I didn’t want to argue over it longer. This pissed her off, and she told me I was being stuck up and since I was “rich”, I should be the one paying. I told her that I was paying for the meal out of my own pocket, not my parents’, but she mentioned that my dad was going to pay my tuition and said I was entitled, privileged and bratty for that. And since he was helping me with moving abroad, I could afford to spend a little. She also accused me of not caring for her or our friendship. I was so upset at that point that I put cash worth half the bill on the table and left.”
