Nancy had a rough day at office, where she was working under her father’s firm. She was walking along with her boyfriend, Christiane. They were going to a concert, which Nancy’s favorite artist was playing. She was happy for the night they will have.
They were together for a year, and they met at work. Christian was an executive in her father’s firm, and her father had introduced them, and their thing started at that moment.
As she was walking, a homeless person called her, “Excuse me, ma’am, could you spare some change?”
Nancy knew this voice, as she turned her head, she saw a homeless man who was sitting behind a sign, where he was asking for money for food.
As she walked towards the homeless man, she looked at his face. The man was avoiding eye contact, as he was looking to the ground. She moved closer and recognized her first love. “Joe?” Nancy said, as she was shocked.
Then Joe raised his head, and looked in her eyes. Nancy couldn’t believe that her love from high school was in this shape, as he was unrecognizable with his appearance.
Christian walked back to Nancy, and asked, “What’s going on here?”
“Christian, this is Joe. We went to high school together.” Nancy responded.
“This… beggar?” Christian was looking at Joe, with despise.
“Joe, it’s me, Nancy,” Nancy turned to Joe, as she didn’t cared for her boyfriends behaviour. As she touched Joe’s shoulder, Christian angrily pushed Joe away, “Stay away from her,” he yelled.
“Please, let me talk to him.” Nancy was sad.
“Fine, but make it quick. We’ve got plans,” Christian said, as he was angry.
“I’m so sorry about that. What happened?” Nancy turned to Joe, as she was sad to see him like that.
“Life, I guess,” Joe said, as he was looking down.
As Nancy was talking about their past, Christian grew impatient, and said, “We need to go, Nancy. This isn’t our problem,” as he started to walk between Nancy and Joe, and pushed Joe again, as he also put his wallet into his pocket.
As he hold Nancy from her arm, he pulled her to their car and he got in too. Christian stopped for a second. “My wallet! That thief stole my wallet!” Christian yelled, “I’m calling the police!”
As Christian was about to leave the car, Joe knocked the window of the car, as Nancy rolled the window of the car down, Joe said, “Hey, I found your wallet!”
“See? It was just a misunderstanding,” Nancy smiled.
“I bet took some money!” Christian continued, as he wanted to put Joe in a bad spot, “See. I’m missing $200!”
“I didn’t take your money,” Joe said.
“Yes, you did!”
“Christian, enough!” Nancy stopped Christian, and left the car.
“Joe, how about you come by the firm tomorrow? I bet there’s a job for you,” she said to Joe, which made Christian angry.
“Really?”
“Yes,” Nancy said, then she gave money to Joe, as she continued, “You’ll need this for a change of clothes and a good night’s rest somewhere. I’ll help you get back on your feet.”
“Thank you, Nancy. I won’t let you down,” Joe said, as he was incredibly happy.
Christian was annoyed with the situation, and he returned to their car after Nancy did.
On the next day, Joe was a different person with his new clothes and shaved face. As he entered to the firm, “Back from the streets, I see. Nancy’s little pet project,” Christian said.
As Joe didn’t cared for his words, he kept working on the assignement Christian gave him.
As the day moved, Joe figured it out that Christian was flirting with another worker in the firm, Lily. They were too intimate with each other, which made Joe worry.
As he was working, he noticed that Christian and Lily went into his office, and it was sure for Joe, they were having an affair.
As Lily left his officee, she was carrying a big envelope, which contained money.
As Joe saw that the office was empty, he went inside, and started to look around for a proof of affair. He found a locked drawer in Christian’s desk, and found a key under a bottle of alcohol. As he opened the lock, Christian come inside and said, “What the hell do you think you’re doing in my office?”
As Joe was caught, he tried to talk, “I… I was just looking for—”
Christian cut his words, “Get out! You’re fired!”
As Joe was shocked, Nancy came, “Christian, what’s going on here?”
“I just fired Joe for snooping in my desk drawers,” Christian responded.
Then Joe started to talk about Lily and Christian, as he tried to explain their affair to Nancy.
“He’s lying,” Christian shouted, “Covering up for the fact that he wanted to steal more from me!”
“I want to search your desk, Christian,” Nancy said, as she was suspicious of him.
As she started to search Christian’s desk, she found a velvet box in the locked drawer. There was a ring inside. She asked, “What’s this, Christian?”
“Oh, that’s… was a surprise for you, babe. I was planning something special for us,” Christian said, “Joe just ruined it.”
“Joe, please, I think it’s best if you leave,” Nancy said then, as her heart was broken.
“I understand. I’ll go,” Joe said, as he was looking to the ground.
After Joe left, Nancy said, “I’m going home, Christian. I need time to think,” to Christian.
As Christian was leaving too, Joe caught him in the parking lot. “We need to talk,” he said.
“What do you want, bum? You’ve caused enough trouble already,” Christian responded.
“I know what you’re hiding, Christian. The truth will come out sooner or later,” Joe continued.
“You have no proof. Stay out of this,” Christian said with a smile.
Then Joe showed some documents, and said , “I know what you’ve been doing. These documents speak for themselves.” After Nancy fired him, he went back inside the office and took them from Christian’s office.
“Those papers mean nothing, Joe. The real evidence is safe and sound—on my external hard drive. I’ll take it home and make sure it stays hidden,” Christian laughed.
“Really? What’s in there that isn’t here?” Joe asked.
“As if I’m going to tell you,” Christian said, “It’s mostly…some creative accounting. You wouldn’t understand.”
“But I would,” a familiar woman’s voice was heard. Nancy was hiding behind a column, and she was holding her phone, showing that she recorded his talk. “Your deception ends here, Christian. I have your confession. Hand over the hard drive.” She said.
“Nancy, it’s not what you think,” Christian said. He was tightly holding the bag. Then the security came, and too him to the officers who were waiting outside.
After Joe took the documents, he talked with Nancy, and she believed to him that there was something off with Christian. Later, Officers found the envelope filled with money.
“I’m so sorry for not believing you earlier. Thank you for opening my eyes,” Nancy said to Joe, as her eyes were getting wet.
Joe smiled towards Nancy and responded, “It’s alright, Nancy. We all make mistakes, and you treated me better than even my own family when I was at my worst. I wouldn’t let someone like that hurt your father’s firm or you.”
