Four veterans and the “super seniors” of Springdale High School, Carl Stults, Bobby Burke, Charles Leroy Moon, and Bob Self, received their honorary diplomas alongside the 484 graduating students.
“I took a GED test when I went into the Air Force and at the time, Springdale didn’t recognize the GED test,” Bob Self said. “I got a diploma from Little Rock Central.”
Back in 1956, these four veterans were seniors at the high school, but they didn’t received their diplomas as they joined to the Air Force.
Later, the district learned that these four gentlemen were falied to receive their diplomas from the high school, while they were having lunch one day.
Springdale Superintendent Jared Cleveland, had readl letters from Gov. Asa Hutchinson and U.S. Rep. Steve Womack during the ceremony where Carl Stults, Bobby Burke, Charles Leroy Moon, and Bob Self attended to receive their diplomas.
“They served during the time of the Korean conflict and beyond. At that time, they didn’t think about themselves, they didn’t think ‘What about me?’” Womack stated in his letter. “They answered the call of duty. Is that not the truest spirit of America?”
